ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE GAULS
Luze, France - April 9, 2009. After the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on Great and Holy Thursday at the Monastery of St. Michel de Bois Aubry, an Act of Full Sacramental Intercommunion between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America and the Orthodox Church of the Gauls was signed by Bishop Gregoire, Primate of the Orthodox Church of the Gauls, and Bishop Gabriel, Vicar for Interjurisdictional Affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America. Pictured above are Vladyka Gregoire and Vladyka Gabriel signing the Act of Full Sacramental Intercommunion between our two Jurisdictions.
The contemporary origins of the Orthodox Church of the Gauls stem largely from two French religious communities that were originally part of the Orthodox Church of France: St Michael's Monastery at Bois-Aubry, Touraine, a monastic community following the Rule of St. Benedict of Nursia; and Bethany, a lay community for hesychastic spirituality at Gorze, led by Father Alphonse and Rachel Goettmann. After leaving the Orthodox Church of France, the two communities came under the jurisdiction of the Coptic Orthodox Church (under Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria) on the condition that they would be allowed to continue the use of the Divine Liturgy according to St Germanus of Paris and the Daily Office (Hours) of the ancient Western Church. When it became clear that their use of the Gallican rite would no longer be permitted by the Coptic Orthodox Church, the communities, joined by some other clergy and laity, formed the Orthodox Church of the Gauls and elected Abbot Michel bishop (Bishop Gregoire pictured above). Bishop Gregoire was ordained a bishop by Archbishop Vigile of Paris and, therefore, has the same Apostolic Succession as Bishop Lazar (Puhalo) of the Orthodox Church in America.
