Nokomis, IL - March 1, 2009. On the Sunday of Forgiveness, Abbot Theophan of Solus Christi Brothers Skete of the Holy Apostles, conducted a blessing of the community by the Holy Cross. Based on the current condition of the town of Nokomis, IL

with its surging rate of unemploymenty, poverty and economic suffering, Abbot Theophan decided it was time to carry the Cross through the community as a sign of hope and resurrection through crucifixion. The wind chill was 8F, and Abbot Theophan had to modify his course due to ice on his beard but processed a total of 5.5 miles through the town of Nokomis.

Abbot Theophan stopped periodically to read from the Psalter (including at the local cemetery), and recited the Jesus Prayer as he walked. The Cross was donated by Cross Crafters in Texas, and a friend of the Skete attached the Cross to a holder. The cross was decorated with blue and yellow ribbons for the people of Ukraine, protesting the suffering they have recently endured at the hands of the Russian political machine.
